Julien Friedler Portfolio by Sonia Bressler

Sonia Bressler designed the book "Julien Friedler, témoin du siècle " after visiting Julien Friedler’s atelier.

 She writes :

“This sunday in Brussels. 16+3. A day of february 2006. Discovery. Shattered heart on the canvas. Wouldn’t History have any continuity solution ? I played on the boards, in Julien Friedler’s atelier. Colors, shattering. Why do we always sacrifice innocents ? I played with my photographic eye. The result is there. Some pictures. Scattered by the wind. A reel only for this improvised session. Some minutes. Whirl. A Bach’s sonata or a Chopin’s valse. In the shape of color intuitions, of blasting interrogations, of scattered details. Dust of eternity. I played with spaces, with time strifes. The bubbles, the barbwires, the scattered cigarettes, the bright lights, the skeletons, the dried blood, the breaking down faces, the murdered children, the tremendous sadness doubled of a huge optimism. The drawn utopia of a better world, an interconnected qualitative and artistic world.”

She posted a serie of pictures taken this day here and talks about it on her blog.

Manifesto of Boz Company

Shaman

The Boz is a full of enchanters universe. It comes from a singular experience of what divine is, reinforced by a stream of works of art (videos, paintings, performances, installations, etc.). Interacting with one another, these works are also connected to a core book titled THE BOOK OF THE BOZ. Three main characters are crisscrrossing the book end to end : Jack Balance (a clown), Me (another clown); and his Scribe (a third clown). The latter will be held up to public obloquy by his readers.

On the eve of the third millenium, the Boz was going to face the world of men. For that matter, he convened a press conference to tell them about its worries. Fundamentalists were rearing their heads. The climate was going crazy. There were no more ideals. As for morals, they were coming apart at the seams.

In a nutshell, it was a total mess.

Somethig strange, rather awkward was to come out this situation : the creation of THE BOZ COMPANY. This company was about to innovate and create a financial aesthetics, more suitable to artists’ struggle .

Shaman

In this era where the old-time great utopia are about to collapse and sects or hucksters are flourishing, we propose to open a research which proven goal will be to produce  this “soul supplement” so many are requesting.

To this purpose, different disciplines will have been investigated, dependent on our own journey (this leading to consider other journeys, different than ours, able to impregnate the work in progress).

Mainly, it will be :

1 A theology, based less on God than his fantasy.

2 Philosophy, where, while rejecting Plato’s Republic, which banished artists and poets, we will attempt to set up a “village of Boz” focused on plastic arts. The concept will be a “new social link” designed as a piece of art.

3 Psychoanalysis, considered as an investigation of the psychic apparatus, without foreseeing the priceless contribution of neurosciences.

4 Plastic arts and poetry, considered as a “rampart of freedom” against any dogmatic threat.

5 Practical knowledges (fashion, comics, video games,…) whose march will concern everyone, everyday. They will be as the front row of a universe seen as free, not elitist, and open to everyone.

A huge program so. So large it will request to display different complementary strategies. This one, for example : a progressive as slow as possible unveiling of the gained knowledge.

An unveiling progressing unobtrusively from resonance into resonance, piece by piece, thought after thought, in order to create the core image of the Great Work. Effectively : a universe in quest of the Divine.

The Boz “Evenement”

Friday, September 29th, 2006

In its May’s issue, the Belgian magazine L’événement published an article about the reception Sotheby’s organized in Julien Friedler’s atelier.

God smiles to angels

An unseen place. The fecund creator’s atelier in Brussels. A writer, a psychoanalyst and a philosopher as well, Julien Friedler, born the 13th of November 1950, discovered art as the source of ‘a bearable truth”, poetic and esthetic expression at once which agrees to “the staging of mankind’s myths”. A playful art to get the tragical side of life acceptable. “God smiles to angels” Julien Friedler says. It’s in his atelier that the count Hubert d’Ursel, Sotheby’s Belgium’s director, and the duke Philipp de Württemberg, Sotheby’s France’s director, set up a reception

Plastic Dimensions of The Book of Boz

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

(pertinent works will be duly indexed and numbered)

THE SPEECH OF THE ANGELS (SA)

This speech will be conceived as a “fundamental language,” underlying the proliferation of discourse.  Constituted of 20 fundamental signs, it will be embodied in paintings in watered effects, in sculptures in primitive forms, or in monumental installations.  There will thus be a desire to promote a mystique, involving the Subject at the roots.  Confronting the proposed works, the spectator will choose his own progression: which sequence in particular; a strange configuration, discovered by chance; even a new arrangement, reconstructed on the basis of the perceived work.  In any case, the interpretation will be his own invention, determined by his own prerogatives.  At the extremes, our spectator will have a synthetic, contemplative and non-reducible vision, which will reveal his desire to him.

"Le Cheminement céleste" by Julien Friedler

THE FOAM OF THE WORLD (FW)

These works aim at the ephemeral before congealing it into an icon.  To this end, they track down reality to grasp its essence.  A fleeting face during an riot; a “great man” idolized by the press; a painting buried in a museum; a pack of candid photographs; a tattoo on a clean-shaven skin; there will be many chances to determine, sublimate and transfigure reality.  In this respect, a work will be emblematic: an “E=MC3,” made of multicolored neon lights, matched by a treatise signed by a physicist.  A treatise in which the effects (atomic imbalance, climatic catastrophes, new forms of life…) due to a simple change of power (C3 instead of C2) will be described.

THE DEN OF IMAGES (DI)

This series will go through The Book of Boz from one part to another.  Often enchanted, it will translate into plastic form scenes, events, characters, even passions and fantasies coming from the text as such.  The opposite will also hold.  More than once, we witnessed this gripping spectacle: sculptures, paintings and installations suddenly returning to life.  Their protagonists then came out of their silence to plunge headlong into the narrative.  That, to the great despair of the writer, who, pressured on all sides, no longer knew which way to turn.

La Vision du Shaman - by Julien Friedler

A fourth dimension will also be planned: “MY LIFE” (ML)

Devoted to the narrator, it will lay out enigmatic works, like anagrams.  Thus that “Self-Portrait with Gag” dated 1998.  In its own way, it will connote a lack, an inaudible word, a secret that shouldn’t be violated.
